Introduction to Fishing Class @ UMS
September 9, 2010, Starboard Choice Marine owner/operator and avid salmon fisherman, Steve Peterson, came to discuss salmon fishing on Lake Michigan with the class.
Peterson brought in an assortment of visual aids to share with the students: rods & reels, photos, informational pamphlets, maps, lures, tackle, and a 22# mounted steelhead.
The size of this 22# steelhead put it in perspective. You can barely see Gretchen's body!
Peterson took a hands-on approach by encouraging students hold and study his tackle. Above, Mack receives a mini lesson, while to the right, Mike sorts through spoons.
Compliments of Starboard Choice Marine and Peterson, he brought (left and above) trolling spoons for every student. Wisely, he made them school friendly by removing the hooks beforehand!
Peterson shared a wealth of knowledge with the students. He discussed the typical life cycle of salmon/steelhead beginning from the hatchery or stream and ending back in the stream.
Peterson went into considerable detail on how to catch salmon; sharing everything from different tackle rigs, electronics, trolling speeds, and lure retrieval. He encouraged students to participate in the Youth Salmon fishing tournament hosted by the Michiana Steelheaders this upcoming July.
